Acne
The skin condition known as acne is a heartbreaker for everyone-boy or girl-who has it. An inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands characterized by an often pustular eruption of the skin on the chest, shoulders, or upper back. The eruptions actually are mean-looking pimples with surrounding redness that sometimes grow into cysts that resemble angry boils.
As of now, no one can predict whether a child of ten will develop acne. The condition sometimes starts as early as twelve years old, and statistics say that more than half of all teenagers are afflicted with it in varying degrees of severity. (The milder form of acne appears as whiteheads, blackheads and simple pimples.)
Well-meaning parents often warn their offspring that lack of cleanliness causes it. This is untrue, though it may contribute to the problem. Some say it is caused by eating the wrong things. Another rumor. The fact of the matter is, dermatologists tell us, acne is a condition principally brought on by internal changes, which begins during adolescence and sometimes continues through the twenties. The body's hormone production is imbalanced by an overproduction of the male sexual. hormone androgen as adolescence occurs. Also, pituitary disturbances, menstrual difficulties, and overactive thyroid can add to the problem. Oil glands become overly active. The sebaceous glands (they secrete oily matter for lubricating hair and skin) expand to accommodate the dooding-through of the oil, and it-the oil-becomes clogged or trapped in a pore.
What comes next is a blackhead. If you liken it to any foreign body beneath the skin-a splinter, for instance-if it is not removed (under sterile conditions) the body forms pus around it. When the blackhead or whitehead has pus around it, it has been graduated to the status of a pimple. It is true that not all blackheads or whiteheads grow into pimples. An occasional blemish which is obviously not irritated or infected and has not grown into a pimple can be removed by simple pressure by the fingers (not the nails) or may be dislodged by a washcloth.
