Facial

Try an at home facial

While you could go to a salon to get a facial, there are ways to complete the same process at home. By understanding the various steps as well as what your skin needs, you can create a fresher and healthier glow in just hours, rather than having to drive anywhere or leave your house at all. Here are the four basic steps to a facial.

Prep the skin

You can’t create pretty skin from dirty skin, so you need to start by cleansing your skin as you normally do. Apply a gentle cleanser to your skin and slowly rub it into your skin, focusing on your larger pores. You really want to make sure that every trace of your skin is clean and free of dirt and oil. Rinse your skin thoroughly with warm water and gently pat dry. You may want to pull your hair back at this point too, in order to make the process move along more easily.

Steam the pores

Since your skin is clean and ready for your facial, it’s time to steam out any other toxins that it might be holding onto. What you’ll want to do is take a bowl of hot, nearly boiling water, and drape a towel over your head to catch the steam. Don’t put your face too close to the steam or you may burn yourself. Your face should be about a foot from the actual steam so that it can be warmed without discomfort. Allow your face to sit in the steam for as long as is comfortable or until you ‘run out’ of steam to use.

Add a mask to draw out impurities

After patting your skin dry from the steam, you will want to apply your favorite mask in this step of the facial. Depending on the skin type you are, choose a mask that will help address your particular problems. If you have oily skin, you might want to choose a mud based mask that will draw out oils. If you have drier skin, try finding a more emollient mask that will infuse the skin with moisture. You’ll want to apply the mask to your entire face and then allow to dry completely. For fun, add a few cucumber slices to your eyes as the mask is drying to help reduce eye swelling. When the mask is dry, rinse it completely off.

Replenish with moisture

If your skin feels a little tight after the mask, you’ll want to apply a little moisturizer to replenish the balance. A little water-based lotion will be fine for all skin types. Even if you did use a moisturizing mask, you might still want to apply a little lotion to offset the rinsing process.

This at home facial doesn’t require that you dig anything out of your pores as the salon facial might, but it still leaves your skin fresher and more rejuvenated than before. Try to give yourself a facial every other week to maintain the best results.
