Impetigo

This is a highly contagious skin infection, usually caused by the staphyloccocus bacteria, or sometimes streptococcus. It mostly affects children. The symptoms consist of red lumps anywhere on the body, particularly the face and hands, which become filled with pus and erupt into yellow scabs. Staph bacteria are actually all over the place, including on the skin of most healthy people, so impetigo is only likely to develop if a person's immune system is below par. If this is the case, the bacteria can take hold, causing the infection, so it's clearly vital to eat a diet that supports your immune system.

Good general hygiene and thorough care of any breaks in the skin are both important to prevent infection. Because impetigo is so contagious, it is essential to avoid touching the pustules, to avoid contact with others, and to change your clothes, bed linen and towels daily. Antibiotics may be needed to eradicate the infection, especially if it spreads into the body.

In addition to following a generally health-promoting diet, it is essential to cut out sugar intake from any source, be it cane sugar, honey or fruit. Important nutrients during such an infection are vitamins A and C and Zinc. Garlic is also a powerful natural antibiotic and can be taken in supplement form as well as in food. Tea tree oil, applied to the pustules directly, is strongly antibacterial.
