Warts

These -skin growths are caused by one of a number of human papilloma viruses. With the exception of genital warts, they are not generally very contagious between people although they can spread from one part of the body to another. They can occur anywhere on the body but the most widespread are common warts, plantar warts and genital warts. Common warts don't usually hurt but verrucae can make walking painful; genital warts can be very uncomfortable and obviously affect normal sexual activity, not just because of the discomfort but also because they are highly contagious. Although most warts are completely harmless, some that affect the cervix have been linked to an increased risk of cancer. So if you suspect you have genital warts you should see your doctor.

As with any other infection, warts take hold due to lowered resistance, so it's advisable to eat a good diet and avoid foods which deplete your body of nutrients. Deficiencies in vitamins A, C and zinc can also reduce your immune system's strength.

Medical treatment of warts depends on their location. Common warts are usually removed by burning, freezing and other methods, but they often return. A huge range of topical applications have been suggested to get rid of warts, though they are not always successful. Common ones to use, on the affected skin only, are: a thin slice of garlic; Thuja oil or tincture, aloe vera gel, clove oil, vitamin C cream or pure paste of vitamin C powder.
